Desire is a funny thing.
It can drive you to do unthinkable, desperate things when it reaches the tipping point. Your judgment can become clouded, and you can suddenly find yourself doing things normal, sensible people just don’t do. I found myself in this position a few short years ago as I pursued my career in network marketing. With the “seat-of-my-pants” move to California to work with my up-line. No money, no friends, and no where to live. |
As I desperately searched for a way to find prospects and build my network marketing business, I stumbled across a prospecting/lead generation company that showed distributors how to generate local leads using “sizzle cards.”
They were basically bright yellow business cards with a catchy headline and 800 number printed on them. The idea was to just leave them around town, at restaurants, gas stations, banks, car windows, etc, as you went about your day.
People would pick them up. Call your 800 number. Hear a nice 3 minute message full of testimonials, and were then prompted to leave their contact information if they were interested.
“This is perfect,” I said to myself…
I cannot afford to spend $300+ a month on leads because I’m so broke I’m having to live on Del Taco and Raman soup. So if I can use these sizzle cards to generate interest locally, I can get some people over to the weekly opportunity meeting, and BAM! Instant network marketing down-line!”
About 10 days later my box of 2000 canary yellow cards arrived, and that evening I hatched my diabolical plan for the network marketing conquest of Temecula CA. (Insert evil villain laugh here).
I spent the next 2 weeks canvassing the town with my yellow sizzle cards.
Around midnight, I’d head out on my bike (use to race in recent years), stuff my spandex jersey pockets full of cards, and then ride all over this small town dropping cards in shopping centers, ATMS, and business parking lots.
The end result of my masterful network marketing campaign…?
Let’s just say I was back in Texas a month later in a corporate job… Ouch.
So why did it fail? Simple. I was targeting the wrong people with the wrong message. I was targeting “business lookers,” not “network marketers.” I was targeting people “who would like to,” but who never actually “do.”
I wasn’t leveraging my time through proper advertising that would get my message in front of hundreds or thousands of people a day automatically.
The “network marketing opportunity” message I was promoting was the wrong message to begin with. Network marketing is a business of advertising and promotion pursued by people who have no idea how to do either, and I was the Poster Boy for that description at the time.
I tell this story because I continue to see people do silly things like this today out of their sheer desire for success. Whether it’s posting signs, hanging flyers on cars, or handing out CD’s at the shopping mall.
The action is commendable, and the desire will pay off, but there are much smarter ways to market and promote your network marketing business.

One of the biggest mistakes I see made by well-meaning network marketers is the attempt to write, create, and place advertisements without any real training.
I just picked up this month’s issue of the Home Business Advertiser, which basically serves as a targeted advertising platform for network marketers, spiced up with a handful of articles by industry leaders. Here is the sad part: I am going to guess there are about 200 ads in the magazine ranging in size from small classifieds to full pages. Out of these 200+ ads, I found less than ten which were truly good, and half of those were professionally written and tested by the large lead companies that placed them! |
The rest: Page, after page, after page, of wasted time, potential, and money. Unless you know EXACTLY what you are doing, DO NOT place anything more than a
small, inexpensive classified while you learn the ropes.
The one and ONLY goal of your advertising is to elicit a direct action from the reader which allows you to capture their contact information. Period.
Your ad prompts them to call an 800 number, or sends them to a website where they can leave their contact information in exchange for something of value. (You have to give them a d*** good reason to leave their info, Or they will not).
Whether you send them to a website or 800 number, those tools have ONE PURPOSE: To capture that information. Not to sell them on your business. Not to tell them about your company. Just capture their information.
Once you have their information you need to establish a good relationship with that person. They will only buy from you if they like you, and most people only like people they trust. You do that by giving them great information and great products that truly make a difference to their lives.
And don’t just give them info through a bi-monthly newsletter, establish many ways for them to learn about you and your services.
This is key: The fact that I am educating through every tool. I am not hiding the information. I am giving it away, along with the opportunity to learn even more.
People would not be able to see the value of the product or system if I kept everything behind an order page.
Why it is important to have so many options? Because once a person finds something that could solve their problems, they want to dive in and learn as much as possible.
With a variety of tools, they can see it, hear it, feel it, and take ownership of it. And each of these items points back and reaffirms the original message: buy Magnetic Sponsoring because it can help you grow your business.
I rarely spend money on advertising that does not have the ability to create instant and automatic direct response cash flow. In other words, I almost never advertise just for “leads” for my MLM opportunity like everyone else out there.
I can, and I do, but as soon as that person opts into my page, they are going to learn about, and have the opportunity to purchase a retail info product of some kind, whether it is mine, or another marketer’s product I am selling.
I advertise retail information products which are sold through an online direct response sales page automatically, 24/7. This pays for the cost of my advertising which means I can advertise endlessly to my target market (other network marketers) for FREE.
Caution: BE VERY CAREFUL when it comes to making income claims on your websites or in your ads.
The bottom line is that you are on very shaky ground whenever you list any kind of income/production numbers. The best thing to do is consult an MLM attorney before you move forward if you insist on using those types of figures.

The following ad was a very successful pay-per-click ad on Google in 2004 for a $500 training seminar.
“(Company name) Reps. Come see how I got 79 sign ups in 90 days without ‘calling’ anyone.” Here is what that ad really says: “I am an expert. I got 79 sign ups in 90 days. I can help you. This is EASY and FAST. I did it without calling anyone. You do not know how to do this. I can show you how and make your life easier. Let me ease your pain and help you sponsor more reps.” But here is the real kicker: these guys are charging $500-$1,000 to get access to this information, and people are just throwing money at them left and right. The only problem with their system is that it is NOT automated. It is a sales job, and takes too much time away from building their primary program. |
You are probably struggling to get your prospects to hand over $100-$300 to get started in your business, yet these guys are making a fortune promoting a “how to” course that will show people how to build the floundering business you sold them in the first place!
Why? Because you are only providing a part of the solution the prospect is looking for when you are promoting your business with your current sales tools. You are leaving out the blue prints/system, so they are going somewhere else to buy that, and as you can see, people are willing to pay big bucks for it, VERY MAGNETIC!
Now we will look at the typical ad you see put out there by people who do not understand the psychology behind marketing yet. This is a real ad I pulled from Google: Breaking News (Company), Fastest Growing Team In (Company), Questions? Feel free to call me. www.(xxxxxxxx).com
What the ad really says: “Another company is launching. We have the best team. Call me.”
What the average network marketer who reads that ad will think: “Another company is launching. Big deal I have already joined three start-ups in the past, and I am still broke. “Fastest growing team?” That is what we had last time. My team did not grow fast.
Call you with questions? Why so you can pitch me on your “big deal company.” No, thanks, I already have one.” Did it appeal in any way to the triggers people respond to? Nope! You have to think very carefully about the ads you write because you will get EXACTLY what you ask for!
Do you want to attract the bottom feeders looking for “quick and easy,” or do you want to attract leaders who know there will be an investment of time, money, and effort involved.
These next few ads promote weakness and attract LAZY people. You will get a high response rate, but you are deceiving yourself.
“5×9 Matrix With Massive Spillover! Join Today for Only $20! We Do All the Selling For You!”
“New Company Launch! We Build One Leg for You! Grab Your Position Now!”
This next ad is SOOOOO BAD that I truly hope this person stumbles across my book. Use the “so what” rule and see what it reveals.
“MLM Business Opportunity, New Business with Great Products Dare to venture on a New Frontier.”
And then there was: “Want a Marketing Miracle? Plug into Turnkey Global Marketing For Instant & Long-Lasting Success!
Instant and long-lasting? Right. This is the kind of junk you DO NOT want to advertise IF you want to attract real long-term leaders.
The next ad is a GOOD AD and variations of it have been used for two-three years now. The headline sorts people and grabs the type you want to hear from. Line two states a massive benefit/solves a problem.
The offer of the ad is a generic report. Lots of value. Provides the SOLUTION to a painful problem: Not enough reps.
“Attn: Hardworking Network Marketers. Add 20-30 People Per Week. 5 MLM Secrets Free Report.”
People know if they are hardworkers or not, so only the people that know you have to work hard to be succcesful will contact you. The numbers in the ad are also very realistic and achievable. On top of that, the person realizes they will probably learn something beneficial from the free secrets and therefore they will be willing to contact you or go to your website.
It is my hope that, if you are not satisfied with your advertising results, you learned something very valuable about how to magnetically attract people to you through your advertising. Good Luck!

Choosing your own domain name is very important and can be critical to your success as a network marketer. Take your time and choose the right one.
Why is it important for you to choose a domain name you are happy with? You need to realize that once you start your business and/or have a lot of customers you will not be able to change your domain name. If you do you will lose all of the advertising exposure for the previous domain name and you will look unprofessional to all your customers. To set up a domain name you need to find a domain hosting company. There are plenty of hosting companies you can find on the internet and buying your own domain name is not very expensive. You can usually buy domains for $5-$10 a piece, per year. |
“Mike’s domain registration rules:” Rule #1: keep it simple. You want to find a domain name that is easy to say, easy to spell, and easy to remember. This is not optional. If you can’t find an address that fits all three of these qualifications, keep looking.
If you are giving your website address to someone over the phone or to a group on a conference call, there can be no room for misinterpretation or spelling errors which means you need to follow the next piece of advice.
Rule #2: Register plural and hyphenated versions. You want to register all plural and hyphened versions of your domain name of choice in order to capture anyone who might misspell the name, and to protect yourself from competition who will intentionally register any domains similar to yours.
Now this is not going to matter much if you are just a tiny fish in the big internet pond and you are aren’t promoting yourself in a massive way. But if you ever start to brand yourself and that domain name, then you need to follow these suggestions.
I recently started a project on creating lead generating capture pages, so the very first thing I did was register several possible domain names for it. (The hyphened and plural versions of each name).
Do not leave a door wide open for a competitor to leech visitors and customers through a similar domain name. You can bet that if I had not registered a hyphenated version of my domain name right after registering my real domain name a cyber squatter would have bought it and would have then owned a very valuable piece of internet real estate. (And he’d probably have a law-suit on his hands).
Always remember that entrepreneurs are opportunistic people by nature. Just do it right the first time and you won’t have to worry about any of these issues.
Rule #3: Use the top “key words” In the domain itself. (But not every time. I will explain why in Rule #5). Search engines give high relevance to sites with top key words in the domain name itself, and a higher relevance for .com names over any of the other extensions like .net .biz . org or .info.
So how do you find the right key words to use? Head to a search engine and go to the resources page for current advertisers, and click on the link for key word selector tool. (Most, but not all, search engines have a tool like this).
Type in a common search term for your category or product or service. Example: If I type “capture pages,” it brings back the following results: The top result is “lead capture pages,” so I would want to try and register something with the words “lead” and “capture,” right in the domain name itself.
NOTE: If the .com version of your preferred domain is unavailable, choose another. You want to have the .com address, because that is what your visitors will automatically type in when going by memory. And if they do not, many will type it in just out of curiosity, and if it is owned by a competitor, you are in trouble.
Rule #4: pay attention to phonics when purchasing a domain name. Try not to use numbers unless you can purchase both the numerical and alphabetical names. If you can find a domain name with both listings available, then go for it.
Rule #5: Register a “generic” domain name that can be used to promote anything now and in the future. Choosing a generic domain name can be very important when generating leads if you are a network marketer. 99% of the time, you do not want to have the name of your company or product in the domain name because your capture page is not going to be promoting your company, it will be promoting you or your business team.
Why? Because I want to keep control of what my prospects see and when. I want to keep control of the presentation of my business and the timeline in which it takes place. My prospect does not know what company I am with until I tell them. They cannot look at my network marketing opportunity website until I give it to them.
Most network marketers will register a domain name with their company name in it, but what if you change companies? What if you decide to leave your vitamin company and decided to sell products for another natural health company? What are you going to do with an email address (that everyone now knows, with your company name in it) when you change companies?
That is why you always register a generic domain name to use for your email correspondence that you can keep forever, no matter what kind of business you decide to build.
I chose a very generic domain name for my first website for this reason: Once you have a generic domain, you can always register another one for your specific opportunity that you can give to your prospects when the time is right. I have purchased over 100 domains in the last year alone. It is like owning cyber real estate.
This is probably going to be a very frustrating process for you if this is your first time
registering a domain name. Why? Because you will soon find out that 19 out of 20 domain names you think of will already be taken. Coming up with something generic is pretty easy though.
Here are a few ideas: Use your name in combination with an extension, like “LLC” or “Inc.” Think of a company name, or “Doing Business As”, name. Once again, keep these three rules in mind; easy to say, easy to spell, and easy to remember. If your last name happens to be Leibowitz, then pick something else!
Rule #6: You want to buy the .com, net, and .biz versions of each domain you choose. When coming out with a new product I might end up buying a total of 15 a domain names: each with a different “.” ending.
You get the idea. Purchasing this many domain names for one project is not necessary, just recommended. So go ahead and make your purchase, but do not buy any of the other services your registration company will want to sell you like traffic generation, search engine submission, etc. You do not need those.
All you need are the domain names, and a basic hosting account which you can set up with any of the many hosting companies.
Start with the domain search box. You will get to know this one well as you search for a name that is actually available. Continue to search until you find a name that meets all of the criteria we have discussed today.
Once you find a name that works, choose to register the .com, .biz, and .info names. Go ahead and start the check out process. Skip all of the extra services they will try and sell you. You do not need them.
I only register my domains for one year at a time to keep costs down. They will automatically renew each year as long as your credit card on file is current. If it is not, your hosting company will notify you.
Congrats! You now own your very first domain name!

Something pretty “out there” occurred to me over the last year! You know, what has this guy been smoking?” sort of stuff. So for what it is worth, here is the underlying secret behind all of the little things that happened which brought me success.
It is the secret within all of the self-help books that you have probably read, but might have never really “gotten.” In fact, they probably left you more frustrated then when you started. I can relate. It took me about six years to finally comprehend this secret. Until you get this part of your life and your head where it needs to be, you will never be successful. It is impossible. You must get this right. |
There is no website, marketing system, lead source, or product that will save you. If you don’t get your head where it needs to be, everything else is just a waste of time, money, and efforts. Success in anything in life, including network marketing, is 90% mental, and 10% mechanical (executing the business).
This is going to sound strange. Very strange. But, here is what you really need to “get,” and get fast; Everyone of us lives in a different world and different reality.
In fact, there are six billion+ realities taking place on earth right now, this very moment. Six billion! And every single one of them is different. With six billion different lists of rules for what is possible and what is not.
With six billion different perceptions of one event. With six billion different ideas of what truth, morals, and justice mean. You live in a completely different reality than everyone else. I live in a completely different reality than you do.
You make your rules. I make mine. You live by what you think is possible in your world. I live by what I think is possible in mine. There are six billion+ people, living in six billion+ realities that are all different. And each person has created the rules that define their reality, or has adopted the rules of others.
And here is the key to all of it; you have the power to completely create the rules that define your reality. And you can do it instantly. What was impossible today, can be possible tomorrow if you desire it to be. This is what God meant when he said that he would grant our every person’s desire.
This is what Napoleon Hill describes in “Think and Grow Rich.” You live in your own personal reality, limited by your own personal set of rules.
This is important: In any situation, the ideas, concepts, and beliefs of the person with the strongest reality will be adopted by the other party. Have you ever heard that saying that “sales are a transfer of belief from one person to another?” Well that is what that means.
When a sale is made, it means that your belief, or your reality, was stronger than the other person’s, and so they adopted it. They bought what you were selling because they bought into your reality. Don’t believe me? I’ll prove it.
There is a remote tribe of people called the Huli living in remote areas of Papua New Guniea. Until recently, they have never been exposed to anyone or anything outside of their immediate area. They live in a world of endless forests with no other people. You and I truly do not exist.
There are no countries. There are no such things as plastic, steal, or paper. The only flying objects are birds, and man has never been to the moon. There are no governments and there is no stock-market. The two world wars never took place. Electricity, telephones, and roads do not even show up in their dreams.
They could never comprehend the sight of a beach, or open ocean. These things truly do not exist in their world. Yet you and I know they are real. We live in different realities, with different possibilities. But the Huli’s reality is just as real to them, as yours is to you.
So what does this mean to you and your network marketing business? People attract others who live in realities similar to theirs. Magnetic Sponsoring is all about attraction marketing. Whether that has to do with advertising “magnetic” offers, or developing a magnetic personality that attracts others…
You will only attract people who live in realities similar to yours…this means that if you are sponsoring duds, it’s because deep-down, you believe you are a dud, and that is what’s coming through to others.
Why is it that some people can sponsor top tier individuals with almost no effort at all, while others continue to sponsor needy, broke people? It’s easy… your reality is a reflection of the way you see yourself inside.
If you truly believe you are already successful, then you will automatically do the things that successful people do, which will automatically attract other successful people to your down-line.
You can’t fake it. You can try… but you can’t. All of this stuff happens on it’s own, without any conscious intent or agenda. It’s just your reality. It’s just the “way things are.” Most people try to “get successful” before they start to act successful. It doesn’t work that way.
The belief has to come first, which leads to correct actions, which brings the results. And the best part, is that you’re only a decision away from creating your new reality.
Entrepreneurs decide to define their own reality. They have come to understand that they have this power. They constantly create, and re-create the rules by which this world operates based on new experiences and new knowledge.
They continually expand their universe by accepting new rules of possibility discovered through reading, listening, and learning about the realities of others who have what they seek.
There are MLM business building strategies and techniques which can change your life forever in minutes. Powerful things which are already part of other people’s reality. All you need to do is expose yourself to these worlds, and open yourself up to it.
Be willing to adopt the rules they live by, and do business by. And as you do, your rules will change. Things which were once impossible for you, will become possible.
New ideas will start to flood you mind. The outside world you live in will slowly begin to change as you place new rules upon it. This is what happened to me when I found books by Perry Marshall, Dan Kennedy, and Joe Schroeder.
New things, impossible things came into my world about building a network marketing business. They completely changed my set of rules and possibilities.
I made their realities mine, and in less than a year, I was making the kind of money that existed in their world. And guess what’s happened since then? Newer realities have been seen… Realities where earning $100,000/mo is not even a big deal.
Where earning $1,000,000+ per month is absolutely doable… and the ability and means to accomplish these goals have presented themselves as well.
If you want to live a new life, a free life, the life of an entrepreneur, you must seek out people who live in the world you want, because the bus you ride now does not stop there.
But before that, you must decide one what reality you want to live in. Define a new set of rules for what you want, you have got to hand the driver a new map with new stops.
Here are just a few of the rules in my world; in my reality: I do not fear poverty, because I will always be rich. Making $1,000,000 a month is not only possible, but a forgone event.
People like, trust, and respect me. Employees are a sad but necessary part of the world. There is no business skill I cannot master. I attract Top Tier prospects effortlessly because they can see that I share a similar reality to theirs.
For many of you, these things could never happen. You could never fathom a 7 figure income, and you could never imagine ultra-high caliber, 7-figure network marketers wanting to do business with you…well, here is the kicker. If you can not see yourself there, you will never go there.
If, your reality, your belief level, was stronger than theirs. If it is, they will absolutely buy into your world. When your level of belief about a new rule you set for yourself becomes stronger than your current belief, then your world will change and you will have whatever you seek.
But not before. Belief comes first, results come second. Define your new reality. Live it, sleep it. dream it, and your life will become it.

To answer your title question - Research. You truly want an online business then you’ll have to take some time and do your research. Things like what is the demand for whatever you offer, who are your online competitors, what price should you actually charge.
I’ve never heard of this fellow you mentioned Mike Dillard or the other “Billionaire” that someone spoke of. I have found that there are roughly a dozen or so guys that all work together and do the best training on the Internet that you can find.
Each one has his own “Specialty” that he teaches and I look at it as the rest ( and there’s a ton of them” are a waste of time, you can only follow a few methods or systems or even teachers at a time or you’ll suffer from being pulled in too many directions.
I’m both happy & sad when I read on here about those ( I’m not saying it’s you ) that are in search of the free, easy, quick fix, do it for me stuff that so many are seeking, and lots of others offer, because I know they will never succeed but on the other hand they are not in my way either.
Again to answer your question, Research, you have to work at it to do well in the long run.

Pick an angle that you like and construct a story for yourself around it. And make sure your story is factual.
How to Attract Journalists and News Stations to You
A “press release”, is a mini article telling your story in a journalistic style to the journalist. Is your story worthy of news? That’s all the journalist needs to know.
Sell to the press the story about “Building on a Budget”.
The first video of “Building on a Budget” showed us how to use split testing to get more leads for the same price we were originally spending. These are effectively free leads.

At the end of your story you need a natural lead-up to promote your website. I do that simply by referring to my company name and putting the address in brackets. For example, “Magnetic Sponsoring’s latest affiliate program “Building on a Budget” (http://www.ClickProfitJam.com)”.

Before writing the press release and issuing it to journalists, we need to do some keyword research.
Why?
Because when we post our story to the internet, we want journalists and potential customers to find it easily in search engines.
Journalists will come across your story through RSS feeds, searches on the internet, or searches in social news networks.
Often bloggers also create content in the same way as journalists do. They’re valuable to you too.
It’s no time to get lazy. Out with the keyword research tools!
You can use wordtracker’s free keyword tool. Type into it the broad term you want people to find you under and submit to learn of related keywords they’re searching for.
From these, you’ll pick the keywords with the highest number of searches and then find out from Google how many pages are competing for them. Ideally you’ll keep the ones with least competition.
You should have a small list of say 5 keywords now. Write one variant of your press release for each keyword.
Making the News
People usually browse a list of news headlines and only read the summary for the ones which interest them.
Head over to prweb.com or 24-7pressrelease.com and find the category or categories you intend to post your story to. Most of the people posting here are amateurs. How can you stand out from the crowd?
Your headline also needs one of your keyword phrases.
There are 5 keywords, so create five news headlines using those exact words. Afterwards, you’ll be able to submit the same press release to different websites and only change the headline. (Note: Submit only one press release per website or you’ll be rejected).

Submit your press release’s URL to Digg and tell the story. Both the Digg submission and the press release should have the same title.
Remember to also blog about the press release on all your blogs. Be sure to always link back to the press release.
